Likened to paintings in stone, Stonescapes are mountain and sea images
created using nature's own materials of minerals and stone. After mining and
careful preparation, the minerals which are stained naturally and by hand,
are then sculpted and applied to a slate backing. The mountains are of mica
with waters of alabaster. Stone on stone, layer upon layer, all intricately
arranged to create compositions that depict life-like land-form images. They
reveal qualities of permanence, dimension, reflection, color with an
environmental presence that enables one to imaginatively slip into the
scene. Many scapes are of actual places with no two alike.
The origin of my ideas for the images I attempt to express evolved from
an early interest in geology, nature, the ideas of C.G. Jung, and the
symbolic life of my own spiritual journey. After years of experiencing the mountains and waters of our vast world, a trip to the Rockies inspired me to portray what I saw using the minerals of Gypsum and those of the Mica group which are as permanent as the ice sculpted cliffs which moved me so deeply.
